PADI Adaptive Techniques Specialty Instructor Course
Become a More Complete and Inclusive Diving Instructor
The PADI Adaptive Techniques Instructor Course prepares dive professionals to teach, guide and support divers with physical or mental challenges through adaptive teaching methods and practical in-water techniques.
For professional instructors, this course represents an important step in expanding your teaching ability, improving your awareness of individual student needs, and learning how to adapt scuba training without compromising PADI standards.
As a dive professional, your role is not simply to teach skills, it is to make diving accessible to everyone who is medically fit and motivated to experience the underwater world.
The Adaptive Techniques program gives you the tools to do exactly that.
The course focuses on real-world teaching scenarios, equipment adaptations, diver assistance techniques, and holistic teaching approaches that allow instructors to help divers of all abilities succeed safely and confidently.
What Can a PADI Adaptive Techniques Specialty Instructor Teach?
This is the professional-level course designed primarily for:
Divemasters
Instructors
Experienced divers interested in working with adaptive divers
The course teaches participants how to:
Apply adaptive teaching techniques
Assist divers with physical or cognitive challenges
Modify equipment and weighting systems
Manage diver transfers, entries and exits
Use adaptive communication methods
Guide and supervise adaptive divers safely
This specialty focuses on training dive professionals to become more capable instructors and dive leaders when working with divers of different abilities.
This program is designed for recreational divers who want to learn how to dive with and support a buddy who benefits from adaptive techniques.
Students learn:
How to assist divers with disabilities
Communication techniques
Adaptive equipment considerations
Diver assistance in water and on the surface
Safe entry and exit techniques
Adaptive buoyancy and trim support
The course helps divers become better, more aware dive buddies.
It can also be conducted as an Adventure Dive during the Advanced Open Water Diver course.
The Adaptive Techniques Specialty Instructor does not certify divers with disabilities differently.
PADI does not issue restricted certifications for divers with disabilities. Instead:
Divers must meet the same performance requirements as any PADI certification
Adaptive techniques are used to help them reach those requirements safely
This philosophy is central to the PADI approach to inclusive diver education.
The Adaptive Techniques Specialty expands an instructor’s ability to:
Teach a wider range of students
Work with rehabilitation programs and adaptive diving organizations
Run inclusive diving programs
Offer specialized courses that differentiate their dive center
It is increasingly considered one of the most meaningful professional specialties in diving education.
Why Adaptive Techniques Training Matters for Instructors
Diving has the power to transform lives.
Many people with physical challenges, injuries, or learning differences discover freedom, independence and confidence underwater. As a professional instructor, you can play a key role in making this possible.
This course helps PADI Professionals:
Develop adaptive teaching strategies for divers with disabilities
Increase awareness of different physical and cognitive abilities
Apply adaptive techniques to standard PADI courses and programs
Improve risk management and diver supervision skills
Build confidence when working with divers requiring additional support
The goal is not to change standards, but to adapt the teaching approach so divers can meet performance requirements using techniques suited to their abilities.
Course Structure
The Adaptive Techniques Specialty Instructor Course is typically conducted over 2 days, often immediately following an Instructor Development Course (IDC).
Training includes classroom sessions, confined water workshops, and open water scenarios designed specifically for instructors.
The theoretical component focuses on:
Holistic teaching approaches
Adaptive teaching techniques
Communication and student-centered instruction
Understanding physical and cognitive challenges
Equipment adaptations and dive planning considerations
Participants learn how to evaluate individual diver needs and develop safe and effective training strategies.
In confined water sessions you will practice practical adaptive techniques including:
Diver transfer and lifting techniques
Equipment adaptation and weighting strategies
Buoyancy and trim adjustments
Assisting divers with limited mobility
Adaptive communication methods (including tactile signals)
You will also simulate real training scenarios where instructors must adapt skill teaching to different diver abilities.
During open water dives you will apply the techniques learned in confined water in real diving conditions.
These sessions include:
Dive site accessibility assessment
Planning dives for divers with disabilities
Guiding and supervising adaptive divers
Entry and exit strategies
Adaptive buoyancy and trim management
The objective is to develop the ability to confidently manage adaptive diving situations in real environments.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
Apply adaptive teaching techniques in PADI training programs
Assist divers with physical or cognitive challenges
Adapt equipment configurations and weighting systems
Manage entries, exits and transfers safely
Communicate effectively with divers using different abilities
Guide and supervise adaptive divers in open water
The course emphasizes practical instructor competence, not just theoretical knowledge.
