About this course
Adaptive Techniques Instructor
This Specialty Instructor course prepares you to teach, guide and support divers with physical or cognitive challenges. It is usually run over two days, often straight after an IDC, with classroom, confined-water and open-water workshops.
PADI does not issue restricted certifications. Adaptive divers meet the same performance requirements as anyone else; you adapt the teaching approach and equipment so they can.
What you can teach
- PADI Adaptive Techniques Specialty – for divemasters, instructors and experienced divers who want to work with adaptive divers.
- PADI Adaptive Support Diver – for recreational divers who want to dive with and support an adaptive buddy. It can also count as an Adventure Dive in Advanced Open Water.
The rating lets you run inclusive programmes and work with rehabilitation and adaptive diving organisations.
Course structure
Stage 1
Knowledge development
Holistic teaching, communication, physical and cognitive challenges, equipment adaptations and dive planning.
Classroom
Stage 2
Confined-water workshops
Transfers and lifting, weighting, buoyancy and trim, assisting limited mobility and tactile communication.
Pool / sheltered water
Stage 3
Open-water workshops
Assess site access, plan dives, and guide and supervise adaptive divers in real conditions.
Open water
