Why Autumn Is an Underrated Time to Train in Sardinia
5 Nov 2024 · ⏱ 4 min read

Most people planning a PADI Instructor Development Course default to summer, assuming warm water and long days are worth the trade-off of packed dive sites and full-capacity boats. It's a reasonable assumption, and it's also incomplete. In Golfo Aranci, the water stays comfortably diveable well into November, the crowds thin out considerably after the last summer charter departs, and the training conditions that emerge in that gap are, for candidates specifically, often better than what July offers.
Warmer water for longer than you'd think
The Mediterranean holds its summer heat stubbornly. Sea temperatures around Golfo Aranci typically stay in the low-to-mid twenties through most of October and only begin their real decline in November, which means autumn candidates are diving in a 5mm wetsuit rather than fighting a drysuit while also trying to learn how to brief a confined water session. Removing one layer of physical discomfort from the training equation matters more than it sounds like it should. Candidates who are cold and distracted teach worse.
Smaller classes, more direct feedback
Autumn IDCs tend to run with fewer candidates per course, simply because most people still think summer is the only option. That's good news if you're one of the people who books an autumn course, because feedback from the Course Director scales inversely with class size. In a six-person course, you might get evaluated on a presentation and receive two minutes of debrief. In a two- or three-person course during the shoulder season, that debrief can run fifteen minutes, and the depth of individual coaching over ten days adds up to a meaningfully stronger Instructor Examination result.
Sites without the summer traffic
Golfo Aranci's better teaching sites get genuinely busy in August, with multiple operators running confined and open water sessions in the same sheltered bays at the same time. That's manageable, but it's not ideal when you're trying to run a clean open water presentation without three other groups drifting through your training area. By late September the boat traffic drops off sharply, and candidates get more uninterrupted time in the water per session, which means more repetitions of the skills that actually need repeating.
What to plan around
Autumn isn't without trade-offs. Daylight shortens as the season progresses, which can compress the usable window for open water sessions later in November, and the odd day of stronger wind is more likely than it would be in July. A well-run course builds contingency days into the schedule specifically for this, and candidates who book autumn training should expect slightly more schedule flexibility to be required of them, not less.
Combining the course with the destination
Because autumn brings fewer tourists generally, it's also a good window to explore Sardinia itself around the training schedule, from the Costa Smeralda coastline to inland towns most summer visitors never see. Candidates flying in for an IDC or considering tailor-made instructor training often extend their trip by a few days either side purely because the island is easier to enjoy without peak-season pricing and crowds.
