About this course
Basic Mermaid
PADI Basic Mermaid is the gentlest way into mermaiding. In calm, shallow water you learn how a mermaid tail and monofin work, how to stay safe in them, and the first water skills that make you move like a mermaid.
How it works
- Briefing: a short introduction to mermaid diving, the equipment and the safety rules.
- In the water: one confined-water skill session (no deeper than 3 m) - getting in and out safely with a tail, floating, the basic dolphin kick and short swims, always with an instructor close by.
Who it suits
Children from age 6, families and adults who want to try mermaiding before committing to the full PADI Mermaid course. No snorkelling, diving or freediving experience is needed - just basic swimming.
What comes next
Basic Mermaid leads straight on to PADI Mermaid, where you build the full set of mermaid skills.

Stage 1
Knowledge development
Mermaid diving's background and culture, the equipment and the primary safety considerations, so everyone knows what to expect before getting in.
Briefing
Stage 2
Getting used to the tail
Putting the tail on safely, entries and exits, floating and finding your balance in confined water no deeper than 3 m.
Confined water
Stage 3
Swimming like a mermaid
The basic dolphin kick and short mermaid swims, with an instructor alongside you the whole time.
