Running a Full IDC Class Through a Busy Sardinian Summer

A six- or eight-candidate IDC in peak Sardinian summer is a genuinely different exercise from the same course run in a quiet shoulder-season week. The training content doesn't change, but everything around it does: boats share the water with recreational charters, sites that were empty in May have other operators running sessions nearby, and midday heat changes how much candidates can absorb in an afternoon classroom block. Running that kind of class well is as much about structure and pacing as it is about diving knowledge.

Front-load the classroom work

Course Directors who run successful summer IDCs tend to schedule the heaviest knowledge-development and standards review sessions in the early morning, before the heat peaks and before the day's boat traffic builds, rather than treating classroom time as a flexible filler slot. Candidates retain more in a cool room at eight in the morning than in the same room at two in the afternoon after a full day in the sun, and protecting that window deliberately pays off across the whole course.

Rotate presentation order fairly, and say so out loud

In a full class, candidates are acutely aware of order: who presents first thing when everyone's fresh, who presents last when the group's attention is fading. Left unmanaged, this becomes a quiet source of resentment. Simply rotating presentation order visibly and explaining the rotation removes an entire category of friction from a group that's already under real pressure preparing for an Instructor Examination.

Manage site conflicts before they happen

Peak season means other operators are using the same general area, sometimes the same specific bay, for their own courses and recreational dives. A Course Director running a summer IDC needs a genuine backup plan for every open water session, not a vague sense that "we'll figure it out," because losing a planned site to unexpected congestion with eight candidates and a fixed schedule is far more disruptive than the same situation with two candidates and a flexible afternoon.

Protect rest, deliberately

Summer IDCs run long days by nature: early classroom sessions, full open water blocks, evening exam preparation. It's tempting, especially with a large group and a fixed number of course days, to fill every available hour. Experienced Course Directors resist this, because candidates who are chronically under-rested make more presentation errors, not fewer, regardless of how much additional content they've been exposed to. A slightly lighter schedule that candidates can actually absorb outperforms a packed one they're too tired to benefit from.

Use the group size as a teaching asset

A larger summer class isn't purely a logistics challenge, it's also an opportunity candidates in a small shoulder-season course don't get: more peer feedback, more varied "student" personalities to practise on during confined and open water presentations, and a wider range of teaching styles to observe and learn from. Course Directors who explicitly build peer observation and peer feedback into a full class get more value out of the larger group than one that just runs the standard schedule with more people in it.

Consistency matters more than intensity

Ultimately, what separates a well-run summer IDC from a chaotic one isn't how hard candidates are pushed, it's how consistently the structure holds up under the extra pressure of heat, crowds, and group size. Candidates preparing for an IDC during peak season should ask directly how a training centre manages exactly these variables before booking, since the answer says a lot about what their actual experience will be.
